MACHINE KNITTING TO DYE FOR
Gallery
Nancy Roberts machine knit and dyed the self-striping yarns for all of the items displayed in this gallery. Unless otherwise indicated, she designed the pattern, and created the final pieces by unraveling the knit fabric and re-knitting or weaving the yarn.
Mosaic Stitch Cardigan
Fair Isle Folk Vest
This sweater looks complicated, but it's made with only two yarns: the multi-colored self-striping yarn and the black contrast yarn. The colored yarn was handspun from a blend of polworth wool, kid mohair and angora. The fiber was carded by Rovings at http://rovings.com
Yellow, orange, red self-striping yarn is framed by an immersion dyed deep violet yarn. Vest was re-knit by hand in the round with steeks up the center front and the armholes. The undyed yarn was a commercially spun blue-faced Leicester from Ashland Bay Trading Co. http://ashlandbay.com
My First Machine Knit & Dyed Sweater
Commercially spun yarn was machine knit and dyed in two contrasting colorways.
Zig-Zag Vest
Handspun blue-faced Leicester adds luster to this unorthodox Gansey. The traditional textured cables and knit/purl stitches are replicated in two machine knit and dyed self-striping colorways. The sweater was re-knit by hand in the round. The center front was steeked and cut to create the cardigan opening. The sleeves are knit from the top down with gussets under the arms.
Ventanitas Vest
Electric self-striping colorway is balanced by a solid black contrast yarn. The commercially spun yarn was machine knit and dyed, and then re-knit by hand. Fair Isle stitch motif, Zigzag, is from Kaffe Fasset's Pattern Library, Newtown, Ct: The Taunton Press, 2003.
The "little windows" in this vest were hand knit using commercially spun merino yarn that was machine knit and dyed in two self-striping colorways.
Chris' Scarf
Celtic Cardigan
Nancy machine knit and dyed 20/2 silk for the weft yarn and painted the warp yarn in the same colors. Chris Little Carmack wove the scarf in an 8-harness twill pattern. The colorway is Grand Canyon.
Collaborative Scarf 1: Sara's Scarf
Collaborative Scarf 2: Adriana's Scarf
Gisela's Scarf
Nancy machine knit and dyed 20/2 silk for the weft yarn. Gisela Evitt wove the scarf in an 8-harness twill pattern. The colorway is Plums & Apricots.
Karen's Scarf
Nancy machine knit and dyed 20/2 silk for the warp yarn. Karen Selk of Treenway Silks (www.treenwaysilks.com), wove the scarf in a warp-faced tabby. The colorway is Spring Meadow.
Nancy handspun multi-colored polworth roving from Rovings (http://rovings.com). The yarn was machine knit and over dyed to create a self-striping yarn. Nancy's partner, Adriana Schoenberg, unraveled the yarn and hand knit the scarf.
